Checklist appropriate drug donations based on the WHO guidelines

Appropriate Drug Donation checklist based on the WHO guidelines.

  1. Selection of drugs
    - Based on expressed need from recipient;
    - Based on National List of essential drugs;
    - Based on WHO Model List of Essential Drugs;
    - Specific request by recipient;
    - Matching presentation/strength/formulation.
     
     
  2. Quality Assurance and Shelf-life
    - WHO certification scheme on quality;
    - No returned drugs/free samples;
    - Shelf life not less than one year after arrival;
    - Special case of speedy dispensation;
    - Expiry date to be conveyed well in advance.
     
     
  3. Presentation, packing and labeling
    - Labels in a readable language;
    - International Nonproprietary Name (INN) or generic name, batch number, dosage form, strength, name of manufacture, quality in the container, storage conditions and expiry date;
    - Large quantity units and hospital packs;
    - Packaged in accordance with International Shipping regulations;
    - Detailed packing list with INN;
    - Weight per package : Not more than 50 kgs;
    - Not mixed with other supplies.
     
     
  4. Information and management
    - Recipients should be informed of the drug consignment;
    - Value of drug donation should be based on world market price for generic equivalents;
    - Cost of transport/warehousing/port clearance should be paid by the donor unless agreed otherwise.
